Postgraduate (Microbiology)

The Microbiology unit of the Department of Biological Sciences offers postgraduate courses and research leading to the award of the following degrees in Microbiology:

Master of Science (M. Sc.)
Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.)
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.)

Postgraduate studies in Microbiology provide a number of areas of specialization, which are:

  • Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology.
  • Food Microbiology and Biotechnology
  • Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology
  • Medical Microbiology

A. Philosophy

The philosophy of the postgraduate programme in Microbiology is to give students the opportunity to develop their intellectual capacity through in-depth training in theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field and chosen areas of specialization. Our mission is to produce well trained, enquiry minded, expert thinker and entrepreneurially self dependent scientists who will expand the frontiers of knowledge in their chosen areas of specialization, provide solutions to societal problems and make developmental impacts on their communities.

B. Objectives

The main objectives of the programmes are:

To produce high skilled manpower graduates that will be versed in current basic and practical based applied areas of Microbiology
To produce graduates that will be employers of labour in production activities and consultancy.
To develop Capacity building for Science and Technology based academics.
