Postgraduate (Applied Biology)


The Applied Biology and Biotechnology unit of the Department of Biological Sciences offers courses and research leading to the award of the following degrees in Applied Biology and Biotechnology:

Master of Science degree (M.Sc.)

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The areas of specialization include:

  • Plant Physiology and Biotechnology
  • Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
  • Plant Genetics and Breeding
  • Genetics and Molecular Biology
  • Biosystematics and Cytogenetics
  • Parasitology.

A.    Philosophy 

The Philosophy of the Postgraduate Programme in Applied Biology and Biotechnology is to give the students opportunity to develop their intellectual capacity in the field of Biochemistry and in their chosen areas of specialization through in-depth training in theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Our mission is to produce well trained, enquiry minded, expert thinkers and entrepreneurially self dependent scientists who will expand the frontiers of knowledge in their areas of specialization, provide solutions to societal problems and make developmental impacts on their communities.

B.     Objectives 

The main objectives of the programme are

i.            To produce scientists with in-depth theoretical knowledge of Applied Biology and Biotechnology.

ii.            To expose the students to the use of state-of-the-art equipment to acquire needed expertise and skills for hospitals and agro-allied industries.

iii.           To build intellectual capacity base for the academia, research institute and government agencies.
